Frequently Asked Questions

What sets your practice apart?

My practice offers a uniquely thoughtful and science-informed approach to mental health care. I specialize in complex mood disorders, including treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder, and draw on deep expertise in both clinical psychiatry and research. In addition to traditional methods, I use advanced tools, including personalized assessments and data-driven insights, to tailor treatment to each individual’s needs. I strive to treat the whole person, not just a diagnosis, and I bring warmth, curiosity, and clinical rigor to each session. Patients who work with me benefit from an integrative, high-touch model of care that emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and evidence-based progress tracking.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, I accept most commercial insurance plans including Aetna, Anthem, Blue Shield, Oxford, and United Health, among others. Please check Headway to verify if your insurance is accepted.

If I do not accept your insurance, a self-pay option is available. My rates are $350 for a 60-min Intake Appointment and $245 for a 30-min Follow-Up Appointment.

Unfortunately I cannot accept patients who have Medicare or Medi-Cal/Medicaid plans.

What is your cancellation policy?

When you book an appointment, I reserve that time in my schedule just for you. As such, I request at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule appointments, so that I may offer that time to someone else. Late cancellations and no shows will be billed $150 for a Follow-up Session (30 minutes) and $200 for an Intake Session (60 minutes)

What regions do you cover?

I currently accept patients from anywhere in California through telemedicine. I am available for in-person appointments at my office in Menlo Park, CA

Do you see children?

No, I see patients 18 and up.

How will we communicate between sessions?

Face-to-face sessions are the preferred venue for discussing clinical matters. However, once you are enrolled in the practice, a patient portal account will be created for you. When necessary, you can send secure messages through the patient portal. You can expect prompt responses, in most cases within 2 business days. The secure messaging system should only be used for routine communication, it is not meant for emergencies. For what to do in case of emergencies see below.

Unencrypted means of communication such as email or text messaging should not be used to transmit highly sensitive or personal information, as this increases the risk of unauthorized disclosure.

What should I do if I am experiencing a psychiatric emergency?

If you believe you are experiencing a life-threatening situation, you should call 911 immediately or go to your nearest emergency room. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, you may also call or text the 24-hour national crisis line at 988.

If you are a current patient, when it is safe to do so, please call and leave a message for Dr. Cohen or share Dr. Cohen’s office number (408-329-1510) with hospital staff to help coordinate your care post-discharge
